TOIL calculator
Work out how much time off in lieu an employee earns for overtime. Enter the extra time worked and the agreed rate.
Time off in lieu earned
5h 15m
= 5.25 hours, or 0.66 working days of 8 hours
How the calculation works
First turn the overtime into decimal hours (30 minutes = 0.5). Then multiply by the rate. For example, 3 hours 30 minutes at time and a half is 3.5 × 1.5 = 5.25 hours, or 5h 15m of time off. Divide by the length of a working day to see it in days.
Is TOIL legal where I work?
In the UK and most of the EU, time off in lieu is allowed when it is agreed in the employment contract or a written policy, and the employee still gets their rest breaks and pay of at least minimum wage. In the US, private employers generally must pay non-exempt employees overtime in cash; "comp time" is mainly allowed for public-sector employers. Check local rules before relying on TOIL.
Track it automatically
TimerOff logs overtime, converts it at your agreed rate, and lets employees book the time off with employer approval. Read worked examples for time and a half, see how TimerOff works, or create a free account for up to 5 employees.
